Right now, it seems that nothing is quite going to plan. The global pandemic, known as COVID-19, continues to change and unfold each day and guidelines are constantly being modified and updated.
Due to the regulations and suspension of gatherings in Australia, physical church services have been put on hold and most congregations are resorting to an online alternative. Many churches are attempting to stream their online services in a variety of ways and are trying their best to be learning new techniques and improving the quality for their listeners in order to encourage people during this drawn out period of isolation.
Despite the fact that this isn’t the first worldwide challenge that us humans have faced, it sure is one of the largest pandemics we have seen in the modern day, having effectively impacted the entirety of the world’s population. So, what does the Bible say about COVID-19?
Although the bible doesn’t specifically mention COVID-19, there is a lot we can take from reading God’s word. We have this awesome God that is there for us even in these troubling times. So, whatever is coming your way, whether it be the loss of a job during the pandemic, limited supplies or even if you are worried about your loved ones, here is some advice that the bible gives us.
In relation to the requirements of self-isolation, Australians have begun to spin this issue out of proportion. As a result of this fearful point of view, many have gone to great lengths to protect themselves from the virus. Everything from stocking up on canned and long-lasting foods, to even battling over a packet of toilet rolls, has led to limits on certain purchases. These over-paranoid attitudes have caused many people to become careless and lose sight of their priorities. Nevertheless, God reminds us not to fear or worry. Rather than becoming overwhelmed and scared, remember God’s words and instructions: “So do not fear, for I am with you; do not be dismayed, for I am your God. I will strengthen you and help you; I will uphold you with my righteous right hand.” – Isaiah 41:10
As we have heard about the many lives that have been lost due to the continued spread of the virus, there is now an increased and present fear of the potential death of loved ones. This fear is completely normal, especially throughout this pandemic. At the moment, you may be extra concerned about the effect that the coronavirus could have on your family and friends, or maybe you are scared for your own vulnerability during this time. Despite the constant fears of death, God again has encouragement; “Have I not commanded you? Be strong and courageous. Do not be afraid; do not be discouraged, for the Lord your God will be with you wherever you go.” – Joshua 1:9.
Reminding yourselves of these encouragements will help, as it is a true reassurance of God’s provision over you. Despite the shortage of supplies and the possibility that your work situations are put on hold, God will always manage to provide for your life. Many of us are bound to be cautious and concerned about what this virus entails, and so you need a reminder that even though everything isn’t perfect, God will protect you and provide for you according to his plan. “And my God will meet all your needs according to the riches of his glory in Christ Jesus.” – Philippians 4:19. For this reason, we shouldn’t worry about what may happen tomorrow or even in the future. “So do not worry, saying, ‘What shall we eat?’ or ‘What shall we drink?’ or ‘What shall we wear?” – Matthew 6:31.
When things are out of control in your lives, or even in the lives of those around you, its important to be reminded that God is your rock and your refuge and is always in control. “The LORD is my rock, my fortress and my deliverer; my God is my rock, in whom I take refuge.”- Psalm 18:2. In your messy lives God’s power is evidently displayed as he protects you from harm. “My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness.” – 2 Corinthians 12:9.
So regardless of the issues many of us are facing, let’s be reminded of the goodness of our great God, who even in all this chaos, is protecting us and providing for us each and every day.
